3 minor girls found dead in dam‚ murder suspected

Bodies of three girls were found in a dam of the Koshi River at Bairawa VDC-3 on Saturday.

The police retrieved the bodies, speculated to be of a six-year-old, three-year-old and six-month-old girls, from the water, said DSP Kedar Dhakal.

The identity of the girls, however, could not be ascertained till this evening, according to police.

Police suspected that the girls were murdered and the bodies were dumped in the dam.

A bottle of poison, a sari and a pair of slippers were found near the site, said DSP Dhakal.

Further investigation is underway.

A menacing river of molten lava that bubbled over a road and overran a cemetery on its path toward a village on Hawaii's Big Island crossed onto a residential property on Tuesday where it threatened to consume its first home, officials said.

The slow-moving lava from the continuously erupting Kilauea volcano has been advancing on the town of Pahoa for weeks, with officials warning repeatedly it is hot enough to incinerate any homes, roads and businesses in its path.

Molten lava is hotter than 1,650 degrees F (900 C), according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Residents living in the projected path of the lava,

"People have their life savings in their properties here. They face losing it all," said Mike Metcalf, whose Pahoa Auto Parts business is potentially in the path of the lava flow, although his home is in the clear.

The lava menacing Pahoa began bubbling out of the Kilauea volcano on June 27 and initially threatened a smaller community before turning toward Pahoa. It came to a standstill in September, raising hopes of a respite, before resuming its meandering trudge several weeks ago.

The lava, whose glowing leading edge has sometimes triggered methane explosions, crossed onto its first residential property early on Tuesday, the USGS' Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said in a statement.

With its hardened top layer extending like a darkened river up the volcano's slope, the lava has devoured grass and trees, turning vegetation into smoke that wafts into Pahoa.

SCHOOL CLOSINGS

The lava flow was advancing about 10 yards an hour toward Pahoa village, a historic former sugar plantation in the east of the Big Island consisting of small shops and homes, with a population of about 800 people.

Education officials said they would close an endangered elementary school on Wednesday and temporarily shutter four more schools on Thursday.

Crews have been building temporary access roads and trying to protect Highway 130, a route traveled by as many as 10,000 cars a day. Two other roads have been closed, Hawaii County Mayor Billy Kenoi's office said.

Authorities have not allowed residents to approach the leading edge, but people have taken helicopter tours to watch the slow-moving disaster.

"I can see the smoke. I can smell it. But they're not letting anybody in to see it," Metcalf said of the lava. People here would like to see what's taking them out."

The Kilauea volcano has erupted from its Pu'u O'o vent since 1983. The last home destroyed by lava on the Big Island was in Kalapana in 2012, according to Big Island Civil Defense.

Between 1983 and 1990, lava flows from the volcano destroyed more than 180 homes, according to the USGS.

Kay Furse, 54, a front-desk employee at the Kalani Oceanside Retreat in Pahoa, said residents in the path of the lava had been moving items out of their homes over the past month, with help from neighbors.

"It's been stressful, a lot of anticipation and waiting and wondering," she said. "I think people accept it and are prepared for it."

महजोडीलाई अमेरिकामा ‘जातीय झमेला’

सबै नेपाली समुदायले सम्मान गर्ने कलाकारद्वय मदनकृष्ण श्रेष्ठ र हरिवंश आचार्यलाई जनजाति महासंघका अमेरिका शाखाका पदाधिकारीले ‘पहिचान विरोधी’ भन्दै झमेलामा पारेको स्रोतले जनाएको छ ।

महजात्रामा संघीयता बिरोधी र जातीय पहिचान विरोधी व्यंग्य कार्यक्रमहरु समावेश भएको भन्दै जनजाति नेताहरुले मध्यरातमा मह जोडीलाई भेटेर उनीहरुले भने बमोजिम प्रहसन देखाउन दबाब दिएको आयोजक समितिका एक सदस्यले बताए ।

गत शुक्रवार र आइतवार न्यूयोर्कमा भएको महजात्राको आयोजना रिजउड नेपाली समाजले गरेको थियो । ‘जनजातिका नाममा राजनीति गर्ने केही व्यक्तिले सिंगो नेपाली समाजले सम्मान गर्ने मह जोडीको अपमान गर्न खोजे,’ स्रोतले भन्यो ।

जनजाति महासंघ अमेरिका शाखाका प्रथम उपाध्यक्ष मणी वाङदेल राई र महासचिव मानवहादुर रानासँग मह जोडीले वार्ता गरेर मध्यरातमा उनीहरुले तयार पारेको कागजमा हरिवंश आचार्यले हस्ताक्षर गरेका थिए ।

जसमा संघीयता र पहिचानको विषयमा कुनै पनि व्यंग्य गर्न नपाईने शर्त उनीहरुले राखेको स्रोतले जनाएको छ ।

‘यी हास्यव्यंग्य प्रस्तुतीहरुमा भरपुर मनोरन्जन सँगसँगै नेपालको राष्ट्रिय एकता, जातीय सद्भाव, सबै भाषाभाषी धर्म संस्कृतिले गौरव गर्ने र सबैको पहिचान झल्कने संघीयता गणन्त्र र लोकतन्त्रप्रति प्रतिबद्धता व्यक्त गर्ने सन्देश रहनेछ’ हरिवंशले हस्ताक्षर गरेको कागजमा भनिएको छ ।

आयोजक पक्षले भने महजोडीका कुनै पनि प्रस्तुतिमा जातीय क्षेत्रीय कुरा नभए पनि जनजाति महासंघका पदाधिकारीले आफ्नो दादागिरी देखाउन सम्मानित कलाकारलाई अपमानित गर्न खोजेको आरोप लगाएका छन् ।

अमेरिका जस्तो विश्वको सम्बृद्ध मुलुकमा आफ्नै देशका दाजुभाइले जातीय संकिर्णता देखाएको भन्दै कागज गरेपछि मह जोडीले स्थानीय नेपाली समुदायसँग चित्त दुःखाएका थिए ।

उनीहरुले नेपालमा अहिले भएको परिवर्तनको आन्दोलनमा आफूहरुले अग्रमोर्चामा रहेर सहभागिता जनाएको स्मरण गराएका थिए ।

महजोडीले यसअघि अमेरिकाका १४ शहरमा यिनै कार्यक्रम देखाएका थिए । न्यूयोर्कमा केही उग्र जातिवादी व्यक्तिहरुले यसअघि पनि नेपालबाट गएका नेतालाई कालोझण्डा देखाउने हर्कत गरेका थिए ।

सविधान जारी नभए कागले राष्ट्रपति निवास घेर्ने चेता

तोकिएको समयमा सविधान निर्माण नभए कागले सविधानसभा तथा राष्ट्रपति निवास घेराउन गर्ने चेतावनी दिएका छन् ।

काग तिहारको अवसरमा मंगलबार राजधानीको शान्ति वाटिकामा कलाकार रमेश दुलालले काग सम्मेलन गरि माघ ८ गते संविधान जारी नगरे काठमाडौंमा भएका सबै काग भेला गरि त्यसरी घराउ गर्ने चेतावनी दिएका छन् ।

 दुलालले संविधान निर्माण गर्न पनि दबाब पुगोस भन्ने उद्देश्यले काग सम्मेलन गरेको प्रष्ट पार्दै भने–‘‘मैले हरेक वर्ष काग तिहारको दिन काग सम्मेलन गर्दै आएको छु ।

यो सम्मेलनले नेपालमा शान्ति, सुव्यस्था तथा अमनचयन हुन मद्दत पुग्नेछ । उनले दलहरुले तोकिएकै मिति माघ ८ गते संविधान जारी नगरे उपत्यकाका सम्पूर्ण काग भेला गरि संविधानसभा भवन, राष्ट्रपती भवन, सिंहदरवार र शीर्ष नेताहरुको घर घेर्ने समेत चेतावनी दिएका छन् ।

प्रधानमन्त्री कोइरालाद्वारा संयुक्त राष्ट्रको महासभामा सम्बोधन

The Prime Minister Sushil commended the Secretary-General for convening the Climate Summit and added that the momentum generated at the summit should  pave  the way next year for a binding agreement on climate change with long-term and comprehensive global commitments for climate solutions based on  the principles of ‘common but differentiated responsibilities, equity, and respective capabilities’.

He underlined that it is an irony that the world’s most vulnerable countries happen to be the worst victims of climate change for no fault of theirs and called for special provisions for climate financing, additional to regular ODA, for addressing the mitigation and adaptation needs of the least developed countries and small island developing states.

The PM Koirala called for the immediate implementation of duty free and quota free market access for LDCs’ products to enable them reap benefits from the global trading system. He called upon the international community particularly donors to fulfill all the commitments made in favour of LDCs and emphasized on the timely, full and effective implementation of Istanbul Programme of Action for the LDCs.  The PM Koirala expressed hope that Vienna Conference in November this year will be successful to develop an ambitious and result-oriented instrument to succeed the Almaty Programme of Action for LLDCs.

Informing the General Assembly about the aim of Nepal to graduate from LDC status by 2022,  he added that an enhanced level of international support to build our productive capacity, improvement in supply side capacity and minimizing shocks and vulnerabilities and, above all, bringing  about structural transformation will be critical to meet this target.

The PM Sushil Koirala stressed that the post-2015 development agenda only becomes truly transformative when the pressing needs and priorities of the most vulnerable and marginalized countries and societies are faithfully accommodated into the broader global agenda and are provided with sufficient resources to achieve them. He added that a holistic development process does not leave an unfinished agenda behind, so the remaining task of the MDGs should be fully incorporated in the post-2015 agenda.

The PM Sushil Koirala said Nepal unequivocally condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and called for an early conclusion of a comprehensive convention on international terrorism; and the effective implementation of the provisions of the UN global counter-terrorism measures.

The PM Sushil Koirala highlighted that the unwavering faith and long struggle for a democratic system of governance has given Nepal strength for mainstreaming the armed Maoist rebels into a peaceful democratic process and lead a successful transition from autocratic monarchy to democratic republican order, thereby setting unique model. PM added that political parties in Nepal including the Maoists are now working together to have a democratic constitution promulgated through the elected Constituent Assembly.  The PM Koirala expressed the commitment of the present government to take the parties both within and outside the Assembly on board within the framework of constitutionalism, political pluralism and the rule of law to put the country on the path of peace, stability, development and democratic system of governance.  He said Nepal firmly believes in democracy’s indispensability for peace, progress, stability, and prosperity adding that peace, democracy and sustainable development are inextricably linked and mutually reinforcing. Koirala expressed confidence that Peace, stability, and democracy in Nepal would pave way for reaping the benefits from economic dynamism in the neighbourhood and at the same time act as a stabilizing force for peace and prosperity in Asia and the world at large.

The PM Koirala quoted Late BP Koirala from his statement of the 15th UNGA in 1960, “the real solutions of the world problems, including the problem of world peace and prosperity, lies in the direction of strengthening and extending the authority of the United Nations. This authority will be strengthened and fortified if the decisions of the United Nations are respected faithfully and loyally by all powers, big and small” and stated that the need today is to be true to the letter and spirit of every decision we make for the good of humanity.

कोरियन भाषा परीक्षाको नतिजा सार्वजनिक (नतिजासहित)

काठमाडौं, असोज २९– कोरिया सरकारले गत असोज १० र ११ गते लिएको इपीएस अन्र्तगत पाचौं कोरिया भाषा परीक्षाको नतिजा सार्वजनिक गरेको  छ ।

 सरकारले आज सार्वजनिक गरेको नतिजा अनुसार ३६६३ परीक्षार्थी उत्तीर्ण भएका छन् ।

 जसअनुसार औद्योगिक क्षेत्रका लागि २७६८ र  कृषि क्षेत्रको लागि ८ सय ९५ जना उत्तीर्ण भएका छन् ।

परीक्षाफल अनुसार उत्तीर्ण भएकामध्ये औद्योगीक उत्पादन क्षेत्रमा ९ प्रतिशत रहेको छ । त्यस्तै कृषिमा ३ दशमलब २ प्रतिशत मात्रै उत्तिर्ण भएका छन् ।
उत्तिर्ण हुनेमा पुरुष ३४ सय ६३ रहेका छन् भने २ सय महिला रहेका छन् ।

 रोजगारका लागि पाँचौँ भाषा परीक्षामा ६२ हजार ५ सय १४ जनाले आवेदन फारम भरेका थिए । तर उत्तीर्ण भने कम भएका हुन् ।

 अघिल्लो वर्ष भाषा परीक्षामा ७ सय १५ महिलासहित ८ हजार ५१ जना उत्तीर्ण भएका थिए ।

इबोला स्पेन भित्रियो, युरोपभरि त्रास

म्याड्रिड, असोज २२ – विशेषगरी पश्चिमी अफ्रिकी देशमा ठूलो महामारीको रुप लिइरहेको इबोला भाइरसले स्पेनमा प्रवेश पाएपछि अब युरोपमा नै त्यसको सङ्क्रमण बढ्ने खतरा देखिएको छ ।

स्पेनमा देखिएको सो सङ्क्रमणले युरोपमा नै त्रास फैलिएको प्राप्त समाचारमा जनाइएको छ । यसका कारण युरोपेली देशहरुमा पनि यस रोगको प्रकोप बढ्ने आशङ्का गरिएको छ ।

स्पेनमा मङ्गलबार थप चारजना इबोलाका बिरामी भेटिएका छन् । ती सङ्क्रमितलाई अस्पताल भर्ना गरिएको छ ।

यसअघि इबोलाका सङ्क्रमित भर्ना गरिएको अस्पतालका नर्स नै विरामी परेको समाचार आएको थियो । ती नर्समा पनि इबोला सरेको पुष्टि सरकारी स्वास्थ्य अधिकारीहरुले गरेका छन् ।

चिकित्सकहरुले यसको सङ्क्रमण थप बढ्नसक्ने भन्दै विशेष सतर्कता अपनाउन स्पेनको सरकारसँग आग्रह गरिरहेका छन् । अस्पतालमा विरामी भर्ना गर्न पनि चिकित्सकहरु डराइरहेका छन् ।

स्पेनमा यसको भाइरस सङ्क्रमण भएको थाहा भएपछि युरोपियन युनियनले त्यसको बारेमा चासो व्यक्त गरेको छ । सो युनियनले उक्त सङ्क्रमण के कसरी युरोपमा आयो भन्ने बारेमा खोजी गर्ने भएको छ ।

ती दुई पुरुषपनि पश्चिम अफ्रिकाबाट भर्खरै फर्किएका थिए र तिनलाई अस्पताल भर्ना गरिएको थियो । उनीहरुको उपचारमा संलग्न भएकै कारण ती नर्सपनि सङ्क्रमित भएकी थिइन् ।

तर ती नर्सलाई कसरी उक्त भाइरस स¥यो भन्ने विषयमा स्पेनिस सरकारले अनुसन्धान थालेको छ । उक्त अस्पतालमा अरुपनि ५२ जना स्वास्थ्यकर्मी रहेका छन् भने बाँकीलाई केही भएको छैन ।

युरोपियन युनियनले हालैका दिनमा महामारीका रुपमा देखिएको सो सङ्क्रमणको नियन्त्रणका लागि विशेष उपाय अपनाउने बताएको छ ।

तर स्पेनमा देखिएको यो पहिछल्लो सङ्क्रमणबाट पुरै युरोप नै त्रस्त बनेको विभिन्न समाचारमाध्यमहरुले जनाएका छन् ।

यो सङ्क्रमणबाट विशेषगरी पाँचवटा पश्चिमी अफ्रिकी मुलुक करिब तीन हजार ५०० व्यक्तिको ज्यान गइसकेको छ । यसबाट करिब ७ हजार व्यक्ति सङ्क्रमित भएका छन् ।

ती सबैको उपचार जारी रहेको छ । अमेरिकामा यसको उपचार पत्ता लागेको भएपनि त्यो सर्वसुलभ भने हुन सकिरहेको छैन ।

काठमाडौ असोज २२ – देश विखण्डनको आरोपमा थुनामा रहेका सिके राउतलाई जन्म कैदको माग गर्दै सरकारले अर्को मुद्दा दायर गरेको छ । राष्ट्रद्रोहको मुद्दामा थुनामा रही अनुसन्धानका लागि पटक पटक म्याद थपिएका राउत विरुद्ध आज राज्य विपल्वको अर्को मुद्दा विशेष अदालतमा दायर भएको छ ।विखण्डनकारी अभिव्यक्ति दिएको भन्दै राउतलाई भदौ २९ गते विराटनगरबाट समातिएको थियो । सर्वोच्चले राउतलाई सशरीर उपस्थित गराउन आदेश सरकारलाई निर्देशन दिएपछि उनलाई काठमाडौमा ल्याइएको थियो ।

सोही क्रममा उनीमाथि राष्ट्रद्रोहको मुद्दा दायर भयो । विशेष अदालतमा मुद्दा विचाराधिन रहेको र राउतको बारेमा थप अनुसन्धान गर्नुपर्ने भन्दै पटक पटक म्याद थपिएको थियो । र, आज उनीमाथि राज्य विपल्वकै मुद्दा लगाएको छ । यो मुद्दापछि राउतको छुट्ने सम्भावना कम भएको छ ।

Terror  everywhere,  children  crying,  grief,  anxiety,  people  rushing  here  and  there;  an  extremely  traumatic  scene.  This  was  what  I  saw  on  a  news  channel  that  was  focusing  on  a  recent  earthquake  at  Haiti.  I  was  horrified  to  see  that.  I  suddenly  remembered  the  incident  that  happened  my  own  country. The  incident  that  I  remembered  was  of  an  earthquake  that  had  occurred  in  Kathmandu,  the  capital  city  of  my  country  Nepal.
It  was  the  day  when  there  was  an  earthquake  in  Kathmandu  while  I  was  about  nine  years  old.  It  was  just  like  a  normal  day  in  my  school  untill  one  of  my  friends  noticed  the  desks  and  blackboard  of  my  classroom  shaking.  Suddenly  everyone  started  to  scream  and  to  run  out  of  the  classroom.  I  had  not  noticed  the  blackboard  shaking  and  did  not  know  what  was  going  on  but  still  ran  out  of  the  classroom  following  my  friends  as  I  was  extremely  horrified  to  find  everyone  running  out  of  the  classroom  all  of  a  sudden.  It  was  while  I  was  running  out  of  the  classroom  that  I  heard  someone  screaming  that  it  was  an  earthquake.
Everyone  in  our  school  went  towards  the  basketball  ground  so  that  they  could be  safe.  The  shaking  had  already  stopped  and  nothing  happened  to  the  buildings  of  our  school  but  there  was  still  a  risk  of  the  earthquake  coming  back.  Everyone  was  worried  that  the  earthquake  might  cause  severe  damage  to  the  buildings  in  our  city  as  the  buildings  in  our  city  are  not  constructed  as  to  be  safe  from  earthquakes.  Even  though  our  city  is  the  most  vulnerable  city  to  earthquakes  the  people  of  my  city  do  not  care  enough  to  build  earthquake  proof  houses.  Everyone  stayed  in  the  school  ground  for  an  hour  then  we  were  sent  to  our  homes.  When  we  returned  to  our  home  we  got  to  know  that  one  of  the  buildings  of  our  community  had  collapsed  due  to  the  earthquake.

काठमाडौँ : बेल्जियममा गरेको ’"नेपाल मेला" का क्रममा नेपालको राष्ट्रिय झण्डालाई भूइँमा ओछ्याएर अपमान गरिएको छ। वालोन क्षेत्र अन्तर्गत सोफोन्टेनमा ब्रिटिस गोर्खा सेना अन्तर्गत विश्वयुद्धका क्रममा मारिएका नेपालीहरुको सम्झनामा आयोजित कार्यक्रममा सरकारले जारी गरेको ’राष्ट्रिय झण्डा र राष्ट्रिय गानको प्रयोग सम्बन्धी कार्यविधि, २०६९’ विपरीत झण्डा जमिनमा छुने गरी ओछ्याइएको हो।

नेपालको राष्ट्रिय झण्डाको प्रयोगलाई व्यवस्थित र मर्यादित बनाउन लागू गरिएको सो कार्यविधिको दफा ८ मा राष्ट्रिय झण्डा भूँइमा नलत्रने किसिमले राष्ट्रिय झण्डाको उचित सम्मान प्रकट हुने गरी ठड्याएर राख्नुपर्ने उल्लेख छ।

कार्यविधिको दफा ११ मा राष्ट्रिय झण्डाको प्रयोगमा निषेधका अवस्थाहरुको व्याख्या गरिएको छ। जसअनुसार फहराउने प्रकृतिको कार्यमा बाहेक अन्यत्र राष्ट्रिय झण्डाको प्रयोग निषेध गरिएको छ।

कुनै व्यक्तिप्रति सम्मान व्यक्त गर्न शवमा राष्ट्रिय झण्डा ओढाउँदा समेत नेपाल सरकारको निर्णय आवश्यक हुने र त्यस्तो अवस्थामा समेत भूँइमा नछुने गरी झण्डा ओढाउनु पर्ने व्यवस्था कार्यविधिले गरेको छ।

बेल्जियममा आयोजित कार्यक्रममा राष्ट्रिय झण्डा फहराउन नभई भूइँमा छुने गरी सिंढीमा राष्ट्रिय झण्डा लतारिएको छ। कार्यक्रमका सहभागीहरुले राष्ट्रिय झण्डा झण्डै कुल्चन लागेको फोटोहरुमा देखिन्छ।

विदेशमा पनि पाइँदैन
विश्वका विभिन्न देशमा राष्ट्रिय झण्डालाई भूँइमा छुन दिन नहुने नियम छ। अमेरिकाको फ्ल्याग कोडमा राष्ट्रिय झण्डा भूँइमा छुवाउन नहुने उल्लेख छ।

नेपाली समाजमा ब्लू फिल्म खेल्ने व्यक्तिहरुलाई नराम्रो नजरले हर्ने गरिएको छ । देशका धेरै ठाँउमा पोर्न चलचित्र खेल्ने युवतीहरु धेरै भेटिन्छन् तर नेपाली समाजमा भने त्यस्ता चलचित्रहरुलाई मान्यता दिइने गरेको छैन् । तर देशले पोर्न चलचित्रलाई मान्यता नदिए पनि नेपाली समाजमा र्हुकिएका युवतीहरु विभिन्न देशमा गएर पोर्न चलचित्र खेल्ने गरेको खबर बाहिरिदै आएको पनि छ ।

कोहिलाई पैसाको निकै आबश्यकता परेर यस्ता चलचित्र खेल्ने गरेको पाइन्छ त कोहि आफनो इच्छाले पनि यस्ता चलचित्र खेल्ने गरेका छन् । नेपाली युवतीहरु विदेशी भुमीमा गएर विभिन्न क्रियाकलापमा समाबेश हुने गरेका कुरा अनौठो होइन तर देशको नाम बदनाम गरेर पोर्न चलचित्र खेल्नु चै पक्कै नराम्रो नै हो ।

पोर्न चलचित्र खेलेर जिन्दगीमा धेरै कमाउने पनि छन् भने यहि पोर्न चलचित्र खेलेर आफुलाई बदनाम गर्ने पनि छन् । त्यस्तै एक नेपाली युवतीे ‘माया बजिम’ले अमेरिकामा  ब्लु फिल्ममा खेल्ने गरेको खबर बाहिर आएको छ । ब्लुफिल्ममा काम गरेबापत बजिमले करिब नेपाली ६० लाख बराबरको पैसा पाउने गरेको बुझिएको छ ।

 अमेरिकाको एक समाचार एजेन्सीले बताए अनुसार अमेरिकि पोर्न फिल्मकी स्टार हुने दौडमा बजिम रहेकी बताएको छ । पोर्न स्टार बन्न चाहनेहरुलाई अवसर दिने साईटमा नेपालको राष्ट्रिय झण्डासहित बजिनको प्रोफाइल राखिएको छ ।  पोर्न फिल्ममा नेपाली युवति काम गर्ने कुरा थाहा पाएपछि अमेरीकामा रहेका रहेका प्रवासी नेपाली समाजमा निकै हलचल मच्चायो ।

बजिनलेका अनुसार उनले १४ बर्षको कलिलो उमेरदेखिनै यौन आनन्दको अनुभव लिँदै आएकि छिन् । उनि आफू महिला समलिंगी भएको र ३० जना केटी साथीसँग सम्बन्ध राखेको बताएकि छिन् । बजिनले करिब ४ हजारजति केटीहरुसँग यौन सम्बन्ध राखिसकेकी बताइएको छ ।

What Is Ebola?
Ebola virus disease (EVD) is a severe, often fatal hemorrhagic disease that first appeared in 1976 in two simultaneous outbreaks. One outbreak was in Sudan and the other was in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in a village near the Ebola River -- from which the disease got its name. The Ebola pandemic in West Africa began in a small Guinea village in March 2014, and is the largest and most complex outbreak of the disease since it was discovered. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Ebola kills about 50 percent of people who become infected, but past outbreaks have seen fatality rates of up to 90 percent.

How is it spread?
Humans are not the natural host of Ebola virus, and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the disease has been introduced into the human population through close contact with the blood, organs or bodily fluids of infected animals like chimpanzees, gorillas, fruit bats, monkeys, forest antelope and porcupines. The disease is transmitted from human-to-human by direct contact with the blood, saliva, mucous or other bodily fluids of an infected person – or from contact with contaminated surfaces and materials. In countries where Ebola outbreaks have occurred, health aid workers are often at an increased risk for contracting and spreading the disease because the health care infrastructure does not provide for proper precautions to be taken. Burial ceremonies in these countries are another way the virus is spread when friends and family come in contact with deceased Ebola victims, according to the WHO.

How is it diagnosed?
Early detection of Ebola virus in a person who has only been infected for a few days can be tricky because symptoms like fever, fatigue and muscle pain can also be indicative of other commonly occurring diseases such as malaria, typhoid fever and meningitis. However, if a person is exhibiting early symptoms of the disease and has had known contact with an Ebola patient, contaminated surfaces or infected animals, health officials say he or she should be isolated immediately. Blood tests can confirm or eliminate Ebola as the cause of illness in suspected cases.

How can it be prevented?
Prevention of Ebola is primarily focused on avoiding contact with the disease staying away from outbreak areas, avoiding contact with infected people and animals, washing your hands frequently and not handling remains of those who have died from the disease. If you’re a health care worker, following infection control protocols is key; wear protective clothing, gloves and masks; keep infected patients in isolation; and be sure to dispose of and/or thoroughly sterilize medical equipment.

What are symptoms?
Symptoms of Ebola virus infection can take anywhere from 2 to 21 days to appear, and can include sudden onset of fever, fatigue, muscle pain, headache and sore throat. Humans are not considered infectious until the onset of symptoms. As the illness progresses, patients may experience vomiting, diarrhea, rashes, impaired kidney and liver function, and in some cases, the CDC says, both internal and external bleeding.

How is it treated?
There is currently no cure for Ebola, but several experimental treatments including blood products made from Ebola survivors, immune therapies and other drugs are being evaluated. Patients receive supportive care for symptoms and are treated with intravenous fluids to prevent severe dehydration. While there are no approved vaccines for the virus yet, two drugs are currently undergoing human safety testing, according to the CDC.

 (CNN) -- A patient being treated at a Dallas hospital is the first person diagnosed with Ebola in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Tuesday.

The man, whose identity was not released, left Liberia on September 19 and arrived in the United States on September 20, said Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the CDC.

At that time, the individual did not have symptoms. "But four or five days later," he began to exhibit them, Frieden said. The individual was hospitalized and isolated Sunday at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital.

Citing privacy concerns, health officials declined to release any details about how the patient contracted the virus, what he was doing in Liberia or how he was being treated.
CDC: We will stop Ebola in its tracks

"I can say he is ill. He is under intensive care," Edward Goodman of the hospital told reporters.

The patient is believed to have had a handful of contacts with people after showing symptoms of the virus, and before being hospitalized, Frieden said. A CDC team is en route to Texas to investigate those contacts.

At the same time, Frieden sought to play down the risk to public health. There currently are no other suspected cases of Ebola in Texas.

"It's a severe disease, which has a high-case fatality rate, even with the best of care, but there are core, tried and true public health interventions that stop it," Frieden said.

"The bottom line here is that I have no doubt that we will control this importation or this case of Ebola so that it does not spread widely in this country," he said.

A number of other Americans have been diagnosed with the disease in West Africa and then brought to the United States for treatment.
